John Hayman is stepping down after 29 seasons as men’s and women’s swimming coach at the University of Delaware, the school announced Friday.
He will remain at UD in an academic capacity.
Hayman’s teams had a dual-meet record of 377-258, won six conference titles and he earned seven conference Coach of the Year honors, most recently in 2008.
Sixty-one of his UD swimmers and divers captured conference titles, five were All-Americans and he had an NCAA Championships qualifier in diver Julie Van Deusen in 2002.
Hayman set seven school records as a swimmer at West Chester University before graduating in 1981. He was an assistant coach at Southern Illinois and head coach at Gannon (Pa.) before being hired at Delaware in 1989.
“John is an outstanding coach,” Edgar Johnson, the former UD swim coach and athletic director who hired Hayman, said in a UD release, “but more importantly he is a gentleman who cares about his student-athletes above all else. He and his contributions to the university’s athletics program will be missed. I wish him well as he transitions back to the faculty and the joys of teaching inside the classroom.”
