Analytical chemistry plays a vital role in understanding the underlying science for finding solutions to various unsolved problems, said the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) director (Research and Development) SSV Ramakumar.

 He was speaking as the chief guest in the inaugural session of the three-day International Conference on Advances in Analytical Sciences (ICAAS-2018) jointly organised by CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) and Indian Society of Analytical Scientists (Delhi chapter) in Dehradun.

Addressing the gathering, Ramakumar said advances in analytical chemistry have helped in development of high quality lubricating oil, grease, Bharat Stage-VI grade petrol and diesel. He stressed on the enhanced cooperation between analytical groups of different organisations for exploring new frontiers.

Earlier, IIP director Anjay Ray emphasised on the importance of analytical chemistry in various disciplines of science like petroleum, pharmaceuticals, environment, forensic science and mineralogy.

Addressing the gathering, XOS USA vice-president (Sales) Michael Palmer spoke on the advantages of real time process analysis in the petroleum industry. Earlier, the IOCL general manager (R&D) and ISAS (Delhi chapter) chairman J Christopher welcomed the gathering to the inaugural session.

The inaugural session was followed by two technical sessions and one business session. The gathering also mourned the death of the world famous scientist Stephen Hawking by observing two minutes silence.

 The general body meeting of the ISAS was also held in the evening. According to the organisers, more than 300 participants from India and abroad are attending this conference.
