Govt. aims to cut time at toll nakas

more-in

Seven toll plazas leading to Mumbai will be modernised to ensure speedy entry of motorists, the government announced in the Legislative Council on Thursday.

Currently, it takes about four minutes for each vehicle to pass through a toll booth, and the State aims to reduce this duration.

Eknath Shinde, Minister for the Public Works Department (PWD), said special squads will be set up to minimise bottlenecks along the toll nakas.

The four-member squads will ensure traffic flows smoothly, and strictly implement the rules regarding yellow lines. The traffic police have also formed special squads to monitor traffic flow at the toll nakas.

“Once a motorist has paid the toll, the vehicle will be allowed to proceed only within the designated yellow lines. We have formed a committee to look into ways smoothen traffic,” the minster said.

Mr. Shinde was speaking in response to allegations of misappropriation of funds in toll collection. The issue was raised by Council member Bhai Girkar. The minister said adequate measures were being taken to minimise toll evasion and theft.
