PM calls on scientists to extend their research from "the labs to the land" |

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the 105th session of the Indian Science Congress at Manipur University, Imphal.
Addressing the inaugural session of the Congress, Prime Minister exhorted scientists to extend their research from "the labs to the land" for the greater benefit of the people and said time was ripe to redefine ‘R&D' as research for development of the nation. He said scientific social responsibility is need of the hour.
He further said, the real sense of research and development in science and technology is to use it for national development and serving for the welfare of the people.
Mr. Modi also recalled Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s clarion call from Manipur in April, 1944 for patriotic dedication to free the country from colonial rule.
He appealed the participants in the Congress to keep alive the spirit of dedication for the nation when they return from the congress.
He also urged the scientific community of the world for close co-operation to bring about effective solution to big problems of science and technology.
He also sought whole hearted contribution from every individual of the country to make a New India by 2022 as pledged on the ninth of August last year.
Union Science and Technology Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Manipur Governor Dr. Najma Heptulla, State Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Manipur University Vice-Chancellor Prof. A. P. Pandy and about 5000 delegates are participating at the annual congregation of science professionals from across the globe.
Manipur University is hosting the 5 day event for the first time. The theme of this year’s edition of the Congress is “Reaching the Unreached through Science and Technology.”
In connection with the Congress, Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is also organizing a five-day Photo Exhibition on the theme “Naya Bharat Hum Karke Rahenge” at the campus of the University.
Photos and videos of the achievements and flagship programmes of the Central Government are shown at the exhibition.
Song and Drama Division of the Ministry is also showcasing cultural programmes like Thang-ta, Stick Dance, Basanta Ras and Bamboo Dance etc. during the Congress.
Later, Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of National Sports University, inaugurated Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation and other development projects including the newly constructed Women's Market at Churachandpur. Addressing a public meeting at Luwangpokpa Cricket Ground, Luwangshangbam in Imphal East the Prime Minister said the change in Manipur is clearly visible on Friday.
He further said, Imphal-Jiribam Road has been improved significantly and other development projects are completing in a fast pace in the last twelve months.
He also said, the remaining three months will be a time to make new achievements in the field of development.
Mr. Modi said, rail connectivity projects in the North-East are implementing in the fastest possible pace with adequate fund flow.
Prime Minister said for the development of the state schemes of about 750 crore rupees have been launched on Friday.
The Prime Minister said these schemes are linked to the dreams and jobs of youth, women empowerment and connectivity.
He said he believed these plans will bring development of the state to new heights.
The Prime Minister said he has always maintained that India’s growth story shall never be complete until the eastern part of the country progresses at par with the rest of India.
He said the North-East can be the New Engine of India’s growth.
Mr Modi also appreciated the sporting spirit of the state and laid foundation stone for the construction of the National Sports University.
He said woman power in Manipur has always been a source of inspiration for the country. He saluted the great revolutionary Rani Gaidinliu.
He said he was privileged to inaugurate a park dedicated in her name.
