The Corporation has appealed to the promoters of private educational institutions within the urban civic body to pay the property tax for these premises before April 15 based on the survey to be conducted shortly as the State Government has decided to levy this tax.

In a statement Commissioner (In-Charge) and City Engineer V. Narayanan Nair said the State Government, through a gazette notification, had announced that property tax would be collected for private schools and colleges. Hence, the Corporation, which is embarked upon intensive tax collection to augment its revenue for executing development works, has set in motion the steps for tax fixation for the school and college buildings.

“The Corporation has formed teams comprising the Assistant Commissioners, Executive Engineers and Engineers in the Thatchanallur, Palayamkottai, Melapalayam and Tirunelveli Zones to accurately survey the buildings of educational institutions to fix the taxes for the second half of the fiscal 2017 – 2018. On receiving the demand notice from the Corporation, the educational institutions should pay the property tax before April 15, 2018,” said Dr. Nair, adding that legal action would be initiated against the institutions that fail to pay the taxes payable to the Corporation.
