Mangaluru pub attack: Govt mulls appeal in HC
BENGALURU: Home minister Ramalinga Reddy on Thursday said the government will decide on filing an appeal against the acquittal of Sri Rama Sene chief Pramod Mutalik and others in the 2009 Mangaluru Amnesia pub attack case, after consulting the state's advocate-general.

The minister said the government is studying the verdict. The third JMFC court in Mangaluru on March 12 acquitted all accused for want of evidence in the nine-year-old case that had grabbed the nation's attention.

Meanwhile, members of the Akhila Bharat Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane, led by their president K S Vimala, met Reddy and requested the government to challenge the Mangaluru court verdict.

"Such a verdict will encourage fringe groups to take the law into their hands in the name of moral policing. The government must appeal aga inst the verdict and ensure the case is heard in a time-bound manner," Vimala said, and asked the government to make electronic media and print journalists present at the spot key witnesses in the case. The role of the pub owner should also be probed, she added.

Stating that the acquittal is a result of police's failure to build a strong case, Vimala urged the government to enact a law to effectively deal with moral policing. tnn
