Over the course of his decorated 16-year career, Sunil Chhetri has featured in several high-profile fixtures. The BFC star, however, believes that Saturday’s ISL final could rank as the biggest.
“It is right up there among the most important matches I have played in. There was a lot of talk about how BFC would fare in the debut ISL season. Coming into a new tournament was not easy for us. When I look back, I’m so happy about how we have performed,” said Chhetri.
The 33-year-old stated that his side is not worried about the 1-2 loss suffered to Chennaiyin FC when the two sides met here in December. “That loss doesn’t affect us. If that game had happened a week ago, then it could have had a psychological effect on us. But we have played so many games after that. Also, we defeated Chennaiyin in their home ground,” Chhetri said.
The forward is happy to see two teams from the south of the country compete for the highest prize in Indian football. “Earlier, it was Mohun Bagan and East Bengal which dominated the domestic league. Then, when BFC won two titles, people started to pay attention. Chennaiyin has already won the ISL once. To see two south Indian teams in the final is great for Indian football,” Chhetri said.
