The Mysuru City Corporation has issued an advisory cautioning the public that their water connection would be cut if found wasting drinking water. The advisory will be in force till the end of summer.
G. Jagadeesha, MCC Commissioner, told The Hindu on Thursday that the corporation was making all efforts to ensure there would not be drinking water shortage in the city. He said it was “unpardonable” if people wasted drinking water for watering lawns, washing courtyards, overflowing overhead or underground water tanks, leakage from water meter chamber or non-installation of bib taps.
MCC will also levy fines on both domestic and commercial consumers for water wastage. For domestic users, the penalty would be lesser compared to commercial consumers, he said.
Mr. Jagadeesha said he written to the Irrigation department to reserve certain quantity of water in reservoirs for drinking purposes of Mysuru city during summer. He said Mysuru city requires 0.4 tmcft per month and it asked the department to reserve minimum of 1.2 tmcft for three months to ensure potable water could be supplied to the city.
Every day 250 MLD water is being supplied to the city from rivers which are being pumped from Belagola, Hongalli, and Melapura pumping stations. According to officials of the department, there is just 11.6 tmcft in KRS and 6.62 tmcft water stored in Kabini reservoir. Water level in the reservoirs may go down further in the coming days, officials said, adding that they have reserved a certain quantity for drinking.
Mr. Jagadeesha instructed the residents to install ball valves to their sumps and overhead tanks and appealed to them to cooperate with the corporation by not wasting water.
