Thanos (Josh Brolin) has made his plans clear: Half the universe has to go. (Marvel Studios)

From the very beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the plan has been to build to Thanos.

Ten years after the MCU’s birth with 2008’s “Iron Man,” we have almost arrived at that moment. So it’s fitting that in the final trailer for “Avengers: Infinity War,” the Marvel Studios movie that will finally unleash the Mad Titan, the first voice we hear is from the person who knows Thanos best: his daughter, Gamora.

Zoe Saldana’s voice makes it clear to whichever Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy are listening: Thanos intends to destroy half of the universe, his sick idea of giving balance to life. And if he gets his hands on the remaining Infinity Stones to add to his gauntlet, he’ll be able to do it with the snap of his fingers.

With the dust settling from the news that Ava DuVernay is directing a “New Gods” movie for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, Marvel Studios’s release of the “Infinity War” trailer Friday morning is a stern reminder that until further notice, its characters are still the gods of superhero cinema.
