Man jailed for theft

He was found guilty of stealing tools used in restoration

A 39-year-old man has been jailed for 11 months after he was found guilty of stealing some €2,000 worth of tools from the site of restoration works being carried out at Valletta’s Auberge D’Italie.

Paul Scicluna, from Cospicua pleaded guilty to theft which occurred on March 14. He did not contest his arrest.

The court heard how relapser Mr Scicluna had been found guilty of theft in 2013.

Formerly the Tourism Ministry, the Auberge is being transformed into a national art museum.

Built in 1579, the building is one of many historic buildings to receive a much needed face lift in the Capital in recent years.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberas presided the sitting. Lawyer Denise Sultana appeared for the accused and Police Inspectors Jeffrey Scicluna and Alfredo Mangion for the prosecution.
