Pointing out other current trend, the shopkeeper shares with us,“Right now, ‘Hello Kitty’ phone covers with attached wallet in the backside is quite in demand. It comes at a price of ₹250. The ones with printed slangs or funny dialogues from Hindi movies are always a hit; they are priced at ₹100.” He adds, “Some also get their picture printed which takes a whole day. But people nowadays are impatient and don’t like to wait for a day.”

“Usually, people – mostly youngsters – come to our shop and buy from whatever is available,” the shopkeeper at Khalsa Mobile Shop says. One of the covers that caught our fancy was the Kitten girl cover with an attached mirror. “It has a unique hidden mirror which can be used for touch-up;it has become popular particularly among college girls ,” he adds. For those who fancy high-fashion brands but don’t want to spend a bomb can go for first-copy of Chanel cases. An attendant at Bhawani Mobile Shop says,“They are priced at ₹200-250. I also have on offer cartoon-printed mobile covers. Then, the ‘Hello Kitty’ covers with attached wallets are popular.Similar to ‘Hello Kitty’,I have covers with the image of a pug printed on it; it also has a wallet attached.”
THE UNIVERSAL FAVOURITE: CLASSIC BLACK COVERS
An attendant at Add Ons Mobile Shop opines that even though a lot of new designs come up every month, the most popular remains the classic black cover. “Customers mostly demand either a classic black cover or one with a slogan; they are priced at ₹100. Teenage girls opt for funky covers but classic black covers remain the undisputed winner, at least at my shop,” he says.
COVERS WITH SOCIAL MESSAGES IN DEMAND TOO
At Mobile Mate Shop, we spotted ones with a small bell and tassels attached to the covers. We even spotted covers with social messages. One of them read,‘Ungli Mat Kar.Ungli Ka Istemaal Kar’, urging people to exercise their right to vote. “All these are Chinese products. Last month, they had their Chinese New Year. The month-long celebration meant that many workers were off during that time.But now they are back to work and we are expecting new stock to come in a week or so,” says one of the attendants.
