Alma was born in Coventry, England on May 29, 1923, the daughter of Albert and Maria (Shale) Cadden.
Alma met Ralph Andrus, her soon to be husband, in the hospital in Coventry during World War II. Many of the soldiers who fought in the war were sent to the hospital in Coventry. Ralph, who was an American tank commander, was one of these soldiers severely injured in the war. After being hospitalized for awhile, Ralph was sent back to Europe to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. Ralph’s tank was hit by a German tank and he had to be shipped a second time to the hospital in Coventry. This time his hospital stay was lengthy and Alma spent several days with him there. The war ended in 1945. Ralph and Alma asked her father, Albert Cadden if they could get married and he said yes. They married on Sept. 21, 1945 in Coventry. Both were put aboard ships crossed the ocean to the United States of America. Ralph finished his time in the Army and he took Alma to his home in Augusta, Kan. They had two children, son Richard and daughter, Ann. The children were both baptized in the Lutheran Church in Augusta and Alma joined the church there. She spent many years worshipping and working in the church, along with being a member of LWML and the church choir.
During her working career, Alma was a florist and also was a receptionist for a doctor in Augusta. Ralph worked for many years managing a lumber company in Augusta.
Survivors include: her husband, Ralph of Inman; son Richard (Cecilia) Andrus of Canton, Kan.; daughter, Ann (Maurice) Elkins of Beaumont, Texas; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
