Pune: A 24-year-old student of a college in Hadapsar received five stitches on his head after one of the four men on two bikes hit him with a piece of stone slab on Serum Road around midnight on Thursday.
The suspects made away with the student’s smartphone worth Rs 10,000 after the attack. Sandip Dhawale, a native of Hingoli district, lodged a complaint against the suspects with the Hadapsar police on Thursday night.
Dhawale, final-year MA student of Annasaheb Magar College, stays in a government hostel. “The attack occurred when Dhawale had stepped out of the hostel around midnight to receive a call from one of friends,” assistant inspector Sandip Deshmane of the Hadapsar police said.
The officer said Dhawale was talking on his smartphone while walking on the road. “On finding him engrossed in talking, four men riding on two bikes came from behind. One of the suspects hopped off the bike and hit Dhawale with a piece of slab on his head,” he said.
As the panicked student turned around to see who hit him, the suspect asked him to hand over his smartphone. “When Dhawale refused, the suspect snatched his phone before speeding away on the bike with his accomplices. Dhawale did not approach the police instantly. He first visited a private hospital and obtained medical treatment. When he started feeling better, he lodged the complaint against the suspects,” Deshmane said, adding that the an offence has been registered under sections 394 (armed robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code against the suspects. Dhawale refused to comment when TOI reached him on phone.
