Three people, including two children, were struck by a Christina School District bus Thursday morning in Bear, state police said.
A 36-year-old woman, along with a 9-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy, was crossing Porter Road against the right of way and walked into the path of the school bus, said Master Cpl. Michael Austin, a Delaware State Police spokesman.
The children were admitted to Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children with not life-threatening injuries, while the woman was flown to Christiana Hospital with serious injuries, Austin said.
The relationship between victims was not reported.
The incident occurred at about 8:20 a.m. A district official said she could not immediately comment as officials were gathering details.
According to investigators, the bus, operated by a 55-year-old Newark man, was southbound on Salem Church Road and crossed all lanes of Pulaski Highway (U.S. 40), in order to continue onto Porter Road.
As the bus drove onto Porter Road, police said, the three pedestrians walked directly into the school bus' path.
"Despite braking, the bus driver could not avoid striking the three pedestrians, knocking them all to the pavement," Austin said.
The bus was proceeding with a green light and had the right of way, he said.
Neither the driver of the school bus nor a bus aide, who was a passenger, was injured. There were no students on the bus.
Eastbound Pulaski Highway and Salem Church Road were closed, but have since reopened, according to state transportation officials.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact police at (302) 365-8483. Information may also be provided by contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333 or www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.
