Lamborghini Aventador Successor Could be a Hybrid

Lamborghini may have used a turbocharged engine in the Urus SUV, but don’t expect the same for its sports cars.

Speaking to Car and Driver, Lamborghini’s chief technical officer Maurizio Reggiani gave a few hints to what the Aventador’s replacement will feature. “I think the future for us is to do [something] similar to what we did with Aventador. We need to reinvent this icon of Lamborghini without missing the characteristics: carbon fiber, the V12 naturally aspirated engine, and other components.”

So although a turbocharged engine for Lamborghini’s sports cars has basically been ruled out, an electrified powertrain has not.

Reggiani admits his team is currently debating whether a hybrid powertrain should add short boosts of performance or be capable of running a longer distance on pure electric. It’s likely any production system will have to do both however, dictated by the driving mode the sports car is operating in. “In Strada, maybe it will have as long a range as possible,” said Reggiani. “In Corsa, it will need to have the e-boost effect for a big power increase.”

Unfortunately for purists, Reggiani also admitted that electrification is just a matter of time, even for a brand like Lamborghini. “It is clear that the road map of the future will be hybrid and then after that will be electric. How many waves of hybrid will be necessary is difficult to forecast, but I know that sooner or later it will be electric.”
