Poland's top horse show goes to Warsaw for national ceremony

Posted: Updated:

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Poland's renowned Arabian horse show will be moved this year from its home in eastern Poland to Warsaw for ceremonies marking 100 years of the nation's independence, authorities said Friday.

The show is traditionally held at the Janow Podlaski breeding farm and precedes an auction of horses there, attracting breeders and buyers from around the world.

Authorities said this year the show will be held in Warsaw from Aug. 10-12 as part of the yearlong national celebrations, showing Poland's achievements in breeding Arabian horses. The auction will be held in Janow a week later.

The governor for the province that includes Janow, Mariusz Filipiuk, deplored the move, saying it would hurt both the breeding farm's traditions and local businesses.

It was the latest hurdle for the breeding center under Poland's conservative government, which fired the farm's experienced head in 2016 and the new chief just last week who was reportedly against moving the show from Janow.
