The Delhi High Court on Thursday sought a response from the city police on an appeal by Suhaib Ilyasi, producer of television serial India’s Most Wanted, challenging his conviction and life sentence for murdering his wife Anju Ilyasi in 2000.
A Bench of Justices S. Muralidhar and I.S. Mehta sought the Delhi police’s response by April 3, the next date of hearing.
On December 16 last year, a sessions court held Suhaib Ilyasi guilty under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
Anju Ilyasi was murdered at her marital home in East Delhi. The Delhi police arrested him on March 28, 2000, after they lodged a first information report on the basis of an inquest report by the area magistrate.
The magistrate had asked the police to further investigate the case after the elder sister of Anju Ilyasi, Rashmi Singh, and her mother Rukma Singh, recorded their statements before the magistrate holding Suhaib Ilyasi responsible for her death.
Initially, Suhaib Ilyasi was booked on charges of cruelty, dowry death and destruction of evidence.
But in 2014, the Delhi High Court ordered that Suhaib Ilyasi be tried for murder.
The High Court order had come on a revision petition moved by Rukma Singh challenging a 2011 order of the trial court which rejected her plea for the trial of Suhaib Ilyasi on murder charge.
