The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday allowed a petition seeking permission for a rally and a public meeting against Sterlite Industries, and directed Thoothukudi police to consider a fresh representation to be made by the petitioner.

Justice P. Rajamanickam, hearing a plea filed by Krishnamoorthy of Thoothukudi for taking out the rally and holding the public meeting on March 24, directed the petitioner to submit a fresh representation to the police.

The petitioner alleged that the company was polluting groundwater in the city. The people expressed their anguish over it, but no action was taken against the company. Hence, the rally and the public meeting were planned, he said.

Though the police had initially granted permission for the rally and public meeting, they withdrew it on the ground that they could lead to law and order problem, he added.
