Alex Smith addressed the media at Redskins Park for the first time Thursday, one day after the Redskins’ January trade for the former Chiefs quarterback became official.
The 33-year-old Smith, who agreed to a four-year, $94 million extension that will keep him under contract through 2022, was acquired in a Super Bowl week deal that sent cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third-round pick to Kansas City. Smith’s introduction in Ashburn came about 45 minutes after the man he’ll replace, Kirk Cousins, spoke to reporters in Minnesota after signing a three-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $84 million with the Vikings.
“We’re not looking in the rear-view mirror,” Redskins senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams said before introducing Smith to a crowd that included Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, team president Bruce Allen and Coach Jay Gruden. “We’re going forward.”
“I feel like I’ve been waiting on this for a long time,” Smith said. “… I’m glad it’s finally here and the ball can start rolling.”
Williams said other teams were interested in acquiring Smith, who became expendable in Kansas City after the Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes last year, but he chose Washington for a reason. Smith said he had some say in where he was traded and one of the reasons the Redskins appealed to him was the team’s desire to win “from top to bottom.”
“This is where I wanted to be,” Smith said.

The Chiefs played every team in the NFC East last season, so Smith watched a lot of tape of the Redskins and was intrigued by what he saw.
“You get to see a lot of other defenses, but you get to see a lot of other offenses, and certainly from afar, watching everything that’s kind of taken place here over the years, the system, the guys that are here, it looked fun,” said Smith, who led Kansas City to a win over Washington on Monday Night Football in October. “I wanted to be a part of it. That’s a lot of it. You watch a lot of film, you can see what’s going on other places, get a little glimpse of that.”
Entering his 13th NFL season, Smith said winning a Super Bowl is what continues to motivate him.

Earlier in the day, Smith participated in a live question-and-answer session with fans streamed on social media. He said his focus has gotten shorter as he’s gotten older, and made it clear that he’s all in for Week 1 like a certain former Redskins quarterback.
“To win the opener,” Smith said when asked about his goals for the 2018 season. “We don’t know the date yet, we don’t know who we’re playing, we know the home and away, and when the schedule comes out here — I think it comes out in the next month — all eyes, you go to that first game. That’s the bottom line. We’ve got to get off to a good start, win the opener. From there, I think you kind of stay in that mode, certainly a week at a time. You can’t win the championship unless you get a ticket to the dance. You gotta make the playoffs. You guarantee that by winning the division. You guarantee yourself a way in, so that’s certainly a goal.”

Before Smith met with the media Thursday, the Redskins introduced wide receiver acquisition Paul Richardson. The four-year veteran, who had 44 receptions for 703 yards and six touchdowns with the Seahawks in 2017, signed a five-year, $40 million deal with Washington.
“I’m not big on trash talking and all that stuff — but you’ve gotta catch me,” the 6-foot, 183-pound Richardson said when asked about his willingness to go over the middle.
