Posing as a land acquisition officer with BMRCL, a man allegedly duped the management of Jnana Sweekar Public School of ₹1.3 lakh on Tuesday.
In his complaint lodged with the Jayanagar police, school owner Vinay Kumar said that the accused, Vijay Kumar, called his office and informed that a piece of land in front of the school was to be acquired for a planned metro line, and that BMRCL had issued a cheque of ₹16.3 lakh as compensation in his name.
Vijay asked Mr. Kumar to meet him in his office at Jayanagar to claim the compensation at the earliest failing which the amount would not be granted. Mr. Kumar told the police that when he met Vijay near Jayanagar 4th block, he was told to get a demand draft for ₹1.3 lakh to claim the compensation.
To speed up the process, Vijay offered to get the DD and asked Mr. Kumar to submit ₹1.3 lakh in cash, and his bank details, stating that the amount would be deposited in his account. “Mr. Kumar waited for two days, but did not receive the money. He tried calling Vijay, only to find the mobile phone switched off,” said the police.
In desperation, Mr. Kumar checked with the Namma Metro office and realised that there was no employee by the name of Vijay Kumar and that BMRCL was not acquiring land in the area. "Vijay had not even given me a receipt for the amount he had taken and we did not think of cross-checking with the department,” he said.
The Jayanagar police have taken up a case of cheating.
