Nagpur: The
state government has released Rs93 lakh to the PWD for construction of classes, laboratories and separate entrance for the first year MBBS students of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (
AIIMS) at Government Medical College and Hospital (
GMCH).
The government had earlier sanctioned Rs2.77 crore for the purpose.
Since completion of the AIIMS building in
Mihan is expected to be completed by 2019-20, the government has decided to start the first batch of MBBS of AIIMS for 2018-19 at the GMCH.
Dr Viral Kamdar, director of the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Institute of Medical Sciences Research and Human Resources, who has been associated with the AIIMS project from the beginning, told TOI, “The government wants to ensure that first year MBBS admissions happen this year and the course is started in the current academic session itself. There are hardly few months left for creating all the required infrastructure. The AIIMS area will be separated from the other GMCH facilities through a separate entrance,” he said.
Dr Kamdar said the government had also appointed an administrative officer for the purpose who will be locally stationed to supervise all the works. The immediate requirements for starting the course include classroom for 50 students, laboratories for first year, director’s bungalow etc.
All these are, however, temporary arrangements for the AIIMS coming up in 150-acre land in Mihan. The construction work of the building is already underway at the site. The 300-bedded hospital along with the college may start by 2020-21. Till then, the institute will operate from the GMCH premises. The process to appoint teachers and the director has already started.
