FRONT ROYAL, Va., March 15, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A small Virginia town has come together to fight against the closure of their labor and delivery unit in May 2018. A 64% increase in maternal mortality is attributed to the closure of rural labor and delivery units across America, according to The Wall Street Journal. "Our new hospital will not offer even the most basic birthing services...which could result in double tragedies of both mothers and babies lost," says Melanie Salins. Birth Local, a movement started by Michelle Matthiae and Melanie Salins, has rallied over 1,100 members of the town in just three days to come together and stand up for their mothers and unborn children, a major feat for a town of small stature. On March 17th from 12-3pm, Birth Local is hosting a rally at the town's gazebo on Main Street to raise awareness and gather signatures to submit to Valley Health Systems.
