Can McLaren's new P1 beat what is regarded as the ultimate hypercar - Bugatti's Veyron? Watch and find out...

Cape Town - The McLaren F1 and Bugatti Veyron are easily regarded as two of the most respected cars in the automotive realm simply because of the engineering boundaries the two automakers broke when creating these cars.

McLaren F1

At the time of its production, the McLaren F1 was like no other hypercar on the market. A carbon fibre monocoque, gold plated engine bay with its seat and steering wheel bang in the middle of the vehicle, the F1 was truly the ultimate roadcar of the 90's.

In a bid to create a pure and proper hypercar, McLaren created a 627kW, naturally aspirated speed demon capable of reaching 380km/h.

Bugatti Veyron

Much like the McLaren F1 did in 1993, Bugatti re-wrote the books of automotive engineering and set the bench mark astoundingly high. The end product? At the time, the Veyron was the most powerful, most expensive, fastest-street legal production car in the world. Its 16-cylinders and four turbo chargers culminated a machine capable of reaching 403km/h from its 746kW motor.

In today's #ThrowbackThursday, we look back at the very first time these two beasts met in one of the most memorable Top Gear episodes.
