A 31-year-old tailor allegedly murdered his sister-in-law at his in-laws’ residence in north-east Delhi’s Welcome early on Wednesday after he found her chatting with a man on WhatsApp, the police said.
Accused Ram Karan allegedly throttled his 19-year-old sister-in law Jyoti Verma in Babarpur, and stayed with the body for four hours before calling the police control room and fleeing the spot. Mr. Karan surrendered at the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in the afternoon.
The police control room received a call at 7.20 a.m. on Wednesday. The caller told the police that his sister-in-law had gone to sleep on Tuesday evening but was found dead on Wednesday morning. A police team reached the spot and found the woman was lying dead on the bed. The main suspect, her brother-in-law, was missing.
“After killing her, he stayed in the house for four hours. His wife who was returning to Delhi from her home town in Uttar Pradesh’s Balia called and asked him to pick her from the railway station. He told her that he had killed her sister and fled from the house. He surrendered at the police station in the afternoon,” said a senior police officer.
The accused told the police during interrogation that he shifted to his in-laws’ home after their death. He had allegedly warned Jyoti repeatedly against speaking to a man in the locality. However, she continued chatting with the man via WhatsApp. Mr. Karan and his brothers-in-law went to sleep on the roof on Tuesday night. A few hours past midnight, he came down to the house and spotted Jyoti chatting with the accused on WhatsApp. He cautioned her against talking to the man once again but she did not pay heed to his warning. In a fit of rage, he choked her to death with his hands.
“He threatened to attack her with a big needle and then choked her to death with his hands. After calling the police a few hours later, he fled on Jyoti’s scooty. He also took her mobile phone,” said a police officer.
Out on bail
“Preliminary investigation has revealed that he was accused of murdering his father-in-law in 2010. His mother-in-law, who was also accused of killing her husband, died last year. The accused was out on bail,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Ajit Kumar Singla.
