Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann and his team were acutely aware of their doubters.
After the fifth-seeded Buckeyes avoided an upset to South Dakota State in an 81-73 victory on Thursday in the NCAA tournament's first round, Holtmann provided a sarcastic thank you to the news media members (including this outlet) who selected the Jackrabbits as the classic No. 5-over-No. 12 upset.
"I just want to thank all the fine, smart, clever journalists who didn't pick us," Holtmann said in a postgame television interview on TNT. "And trust me, our guys were aware of that. So...appreciate that."
Holtmann has been proving doubters wrong all season, guiding the Buckeyes to a 25-8 record in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year in his first season at the helm. Last year, he guided Butler to a Sweet 16 finish.
