The number of voters in the 11 Assembly constituencies of Mysuru district has gone up by more than 2.59 lakh, when compared to the 2013 Assembly polls.
This increase is because of the enrolment of young voters, who have crossed 18 years of age, besides persons who have shifted their residence to a new address in a particular constituency.
The Election Commission of India published the final voters’ list for 2018 polls after conclusion of the recent summary revision of electoral rolls.
The highest increase in the number of voters has been recorded in Chamundeshwari constituency, where the total electorate has gone up from 2,39,448 voters in 2013 to 2,89,111 now. Incidentally, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is planning to seek re-election from this constituency.
Chamundeshwari constituency is followed by Narasimharaja Assembly segment, where the number of voters went up from 2,11,635 to 2,53,051 voters during the recent exercise, indicating an increase of 41,416 voters.
The least increase has been recorded in K.R. Nagar Assembly segment, where the number of voters have gone up from 1,88,498 voters to 2,01,189, which translates to an increase of 12,691 voters.
JD(S) councillor K.V. Mallesh, who is the party’s candidate for Krishnaraja Assembly segment in Mysuru, said with the increase in voters, candidates will have to put in extra effort to reach out to people in their respective constituencies. On whether it will have any bearing on their election expenditure, Mr. Mallesh said it will make no difference in expenditure to candidates, who keep in touch with their electorate and go on padayatra to meet the voters.
Congress spokesperson H.A. Venkatesh said the candidates will, however, need more time for canvassing if they have to reach out to a higher number of electorate.
Increase in the number of voters also holds out the possibility of an increase in voter turnout as youngsters would cast their votes enthusiastically.
