Man Utd news: Jermaine Jenas fears for Jose Mourinho

United beat Liverpool on Saturday to strengthen their hold on second spot but the mood soon soured.

They were dumped out the Champions League after being beaten 2-1 by Sevilla and Jenas predicts a possible backlash.

He told unibet: “This negativity is not sustainable for a club like Manchester United, it’s not what they’re about, and I think eventually the fans just won’t put up with it anymore.

“In fact, I don’t think they’re entirely happy as things are now. United have won trophies and had good spells under Mourinho and I think some are satisfied that there has been undoubted progression, but that won’t be good enough for long.

Jose Mourinho's Manchester United were dumped out the Champions League

“Mourinho’s argument will be that he has taken them from sixth last season to likely runners-up this year, and he’ll point to the trophies.

“It’s a compelling case, but when I look at them tactically and the way they play in relation to the players he has at his disposal – something doesn’t match up.

“I’ve seen this side be dominated in terms of possession far too many times by far lesser sides, and it’s really very worrying for Manchester United fans.

“Don’t get me wrong, Mourinho still knows how to get the job done, how to win titles and big games, but I worry for him on the basis of the football being played by other clubs like Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea too at times.

“Fans enjoy watching those teams play, but with United I worry for Mourinho and how long their fans will accept this approach.”

Jenas believes only Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford can escape criticism after the Sevilla defeat. For Alexis Sanchez, meanwhile, it was more frustration.

Jenas added: “To add to their worries, Sanchez is not performing well at all, but he’ll get time to compose himself and get his form together, because we all know he’s not playing anywhere near his ability.

“Something’s not fitting right at the moment, but the only thing he can do is keep ploughing on and I’m sure things will turn around.”
