CORALVILLE — A discarded cigarette is being blamed for an apartment building fire that sent one person to the hospital Wednesday night.

According to the Coralville Fire Department, crews responded to a fire at 30 Redtail Bend at 10:45 p.m. When firefighters arrived on scene, they discovered a second floor deck fire that had already been extinguished.

Authorities said one occupants was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Firefighters remained on the scene for an hour to look for hot spots and investigate the cause of the fire, which was determined to be “improperly discovered smoking material,” according to a press release.
