Hordes of Indian students go abroad every year for higher education. Fewer foreign students, however, land here. Now, the Centre plans to launch a ‘Study in India’ campaign next month to promote the country as a hub for higher education.
“We are identifying the best 150 Indian institutions, including IITs, and will offer these to the foreign students to apply. After that, merit will prevail,” said R Subrahmanyam, Secretary, Department of Higher Education. The campaign, to be run in 30 nations, aims to bring in 15,000 foreign students. At present, around 8,000 foreign nationals come to India in pursuit of higher education.
Earlier, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar had said his ministry would launch a ‘Study in India’ initiative.
Last week, during French President Emmanuel Macron’s official visit to India, the two nations had signed an MoU on “mutual recognition of educational qualifications”, among other agreements.
