BENGALURU: Be it the shortage of water or unscientific waste disposal units, the Yeshwanthpur assembly constituency is all about issues.

On the periphery of the city, Yeshwanthpur has a mix of urban and rural characteristics. Though a railway station is named after Yeshwanthpur, the station falls into the neighbouring Malleswaram assembly segment. Even the agriculture produce marketing committee yard, another landmark, is part of Rajarajeshwari Nagar.

The Yeshwanthpur segment came into existence only after delimitation in 2008 and was carved out of Magadi and the erstwhile Uttarahalli constituencies. Primarily a residential suburb, citizens here are deprived of basic facilities such as underground drainage, robust transport and Cauvery water supply.

It is one of the four constituencies with the highest number of voters (4.54 lakh) among all the 28 assembly constituencies in Bengaluru. It constituency comprises five BBMP wards — Herohalli, Ullalu, Kengeri and Hemmigepura — all of which were either villages or town municipal councils that were added to the Bruhat BengaluruMahanagara Palike in 2007.

Plenty of issues
“The primary source of water for us is either borewells or private water tankers. The quality of water is bad but we have no choice,” VK Srivatsa, a resident of Balaji Layout in Hemmigepura ward, pointed out.

2008 Shobha Karandlaje (BJP) 57,643 ST Somashekar (Congress)

Like Hemmigepura, the other five wards lack civic amenities. “A number of residential apartments are coming up but water is an issue. Private water tanker operators are digging borewells on the lake bed and supplying water but the water is contaminated,” Srivatsa said. He noted that the last-mile connectivity from Yelachenahalli metro station is poor.

This constituency receives almost half of the waste generated across the city. This is because five of the 12 waste processing centres in the city are located here. “Waste is being processed unscientifically and the groundwater is heavily contaminated. Those who live close to these plants are complaining of health complications,” MadheGowda, a BJP functionary, said.
