Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday issued a public apology to former Punjab minister and senior Akali Dal leader, Bikram Majithia, for his past allegations on the latter’s alleged involvement in drug trade.

During the 2017 Punjab elections, Kejriwal had attacked the Punjab government and particularly Majithia for being hand in glove with the drug mafia in the state, according to News18. 

The AAP leader had also accused him of patronising drug trade in Punjab and even called him a "drug lord".

In one of the rallies, the AAP chief had vowed to arrest Majithia within six months for his alleged role in drug smuggling.

The former revenue minister then filed a defamation case against Kejriwal and AAP leaders Sanjay Singh and Ashish Khetan in Amritsar court.

On Thursday, Kejriwal took back his statement and filed an apology letter in the court, The Tribune reported.

In the letter, according to India Today, Kejriwal wrote, "In the recent past I made certain statements and allegations against you regarding your alleged involvement in drug trade. These statements became a political issue. Now, I have learnt that allegations are unfounded. Hence, there should be no politics on such issues".

"I hereby withdraw all my statements and allegations made against you and apologies for the same," Kejriwal said.

Majithia who tweeted the letter said that he will withdraw the defamation case against Kejriwal, The Times of India reported.

"Kejriwal has tendered an apology to me in the court,for all the baseless&false allegations he and his party levelled against me in drug. My mother suffered the most due to all this&this apology is vindication of her faith in Waheguru’s power of justice," he tweeted.
