RLD vice president Jayant Chaudhary today said the outcome of the bypolls to the two Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh has proved that people have lost faith in the BJP-led governments both at Centre and the state, and the saffron party needs to improve its functioning.
In a stunning blow to the BJP ahead of the 2019 general elections, the party yesterday lost bypolls to Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats to the Samajwadi Party. Gorakhpur seat was earlier held by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath while his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya held the Phulpur seat.
"Promises made to farmers, youth and unemployed by the central and state governments have proved to be hollow... the (bypoll) results proved that people are not satisfied with the working of these governments. The BJP needs to review and improve its working," Chaudhary told mediapersons here.
To a question on the strategy for 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the RLD leader said, "Opposition unity will be known only when the time comes...we will keep an eye on what sort of pre-poll alliance emerges...we will be a part of the alliance with the Opposition parties," he said.
Congratulating Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati for the grand showing in the bye-elections, the RLD leader said his party has been fighting for the rights of farmers and it would be taken forward.
"Farmers are not getting the right price of their produce... almost 40 per cent sugarcane has not yet been purchased," Chaudhary said.
On questions being raised about functioning of EVMs, he said, "If so many questions are being raised, the Election Commission needs to take note and redress these.
