A policeman guarding a Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader was injured in a militant attack on the outskirts of Srinagar city on Thursday.

Reports said state BJP leader Mohammad Anwar Khan along with his two personal security officers (PSOs) was fired upon by militants at Balhama and tried to snatch service rifles from them. However, the policemen fired in retaliation and foiled the attempt.

One of the policemen sustained bullet wounds in the incident while the militants managed to escape from the spot, reports added. Soon after the incident, a joint team of army, CRPF and special operation group (SOG) of police cordoned off the area and launched a hunt to nab the assailants.

State spokesperson of BJP Altaf Thakur said that Khan was fired at by a couple of militants, but he escaped unhurt.
