Margao bans plastic bags from April
MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has banned the use of plastic bags below 50 microns in the town from April 1.

In a public notice issued by the chief officer of the MMC, Johnson Fernandes, the residents of Margao, including occupants of commercial premises of the town, have been asked to desist from using or supplying plastic bags below 50 microns, and further warned that every offence committed would be penalized with Rs 5,000.


“With effect from April 1, no person shall be allowed to sell/pack/handover plastic bags to customers, be it a trader, shopkeeper, street vendor, including fish/chicken/mutton vendor or a bread seller or any other business establishment,” the order reads.


The MMC has asked those persons who still wish to deal with plastic, to register themselves with the municipality on payment of Rs 48,000 per annum (non-refundable).
