Agency's callousness leads to the cancellation of 5,000 ration cards in Noida

NOIDA: Poonam, a resident of Noida's Sector-9 Furniture Market, had her ration card cancelled because it was connected to a wrong Aadhaar number.

Poonam is one of the members of the 5,000 families whose ration card was rescinded after the District Supply Department found that they were connected to the wrong Aadhaar number.

Out of these 5,000 families, ration cards of 1,700 were cancelled by regional food office, whereas rest were cancelled by the Surajpur office.

An investigation has been ordered by the authorities and the number of cancelled ration cards are expected to rise.

Initial investigations have revealed that the agency's callousness resulted in the cancellation of the ration cards.

Following the implementation of National Food Safety Act, the authority issued new cards to all the holders. During the filing of application form for the new ration cards, the applicants were not informed about the mandatory Aadhaar field, which was left blank.

The mistake happened when the application forms went to the data entry department. The newly-acquired software rejected all the forms without the mandatory Aadhaar number.

Though the department notified the subsequent applicants to fill their Aadhaar number, the old forms, without the Aadhaar numbers, were filled with random Aadhaar numbers to complete the task.

Now, when the Aadhaar number of ration card holders were verified with the Aadhaar number in the system, the verification process failed. Not only did the system rejected the application, the agency went a step ahead and cancelled these rejected ration cards.

The families were made aware of the cancellation only when they went to the Point of Sale (PoS) to collect their supplies.
