A woman has described her panic when a car driving the wrong way down the A55 nearly smashed into her vehicle.

Tricia Green was driving on the eastbound carriageway of the A55 with her daughter yesterday evening when a car travelling the wrong-way down the busy route forced her and another vehicle which was overtaking hers to take evasive action.

The shocking incident comes just weeks after motorist Paul Jones was killed when a car travelling the wrong way down the A55 at Talybont crashed into his vehicle.

A week before Mr Jones’ death, there were also reports of a different vehicle travelling the wrong way down the road near Bangor.

Ms Green said yesterday’s incident, which happened at around 7.30pm, had left her shocked.

She said: “I was driving towards Chester on the A55, it was quite a bit before turning for Flint, and a car was overtaking me.

“Then I saw a car being driven in the overtaking lane heading towards the [overtaking] car.

“We both braked and the car overtaking pulled back in behind me.”

Reports flooded in on social media last night that the vehicle later crashed near Flint.

The Welsh Ambulance Service said they were not called.

Ms Green, from St Asaph, said she was “in shock and panic”, because she said she knew the car must of been going wrong way “for a while”.

Further down the road Ms Green said she saw two police cars racing to the scene.

She added that “something needs to be done” about the number of people travelling in the wrong direction, and suggested “metal pegs” which prevent people driving the wrong way down slip roads could be used.

Ms Green added that her daughter, who is learning to drive, was left shaken by the incident and she was concerned it might prevent her continuing to learn.

The driver of the Nissan was taken to hospital with serious, life-changing injuries.

His current condition is not known.

A week earlier, there were reports on social media that a man was driving the wrong way down the A55 near Bangor, but police said they had no record of the incident.

North Wales Police have been approached for comment.
