PUNE: The
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has so far recovered Rs 994 crore worth of property tax, said a statement issued by
property tax department of PMC.
As per the press statement the department has recovered this tax between March 31, 2017 and till March 7. "The divisional inspectors have been told to complete their targets.
Use of music bands and other squads has been increased for better recovery from defaulters," the statement said.
The target for current financial year is Rs 1862 crore. Last year, the civic body mopped up around Rs1,200 crore through property tax collection. The next year’s target has been revised by Rs52 crore.
There are 8.3 lakh taxable properties in Pune, of which 1 lakh are commercial. Officials said PMC had expected revenue from property owners in the newly merged villages. “So far we have got Rs 10 core from these villages,” said a PMC official.
The issue of revenue from property tax had recently made the news after a hike was proposed by elected members, cutting across party lines. Earlier, civic activists had opposed the hike, saying that it would not help the civic coffers in the long run. They had instead demanded steps to recover dues from
errant property owners. The general body of PMC had rejected the hike.
