GM Wants Car Owners to Rent Out Their Vehicles
According to a recent report, General Motors is launching a pilot program aimed to take on Turo and Getaround.
The test program will basically let owners rent out their vehicles to other people, as peer-to-peer car sharing continues to gain popularity thanks to existing services such as Turo and Getaround. It’s basically what Airbnb Inc. has done for real estate, and GM’s Maven car-sharing unit looks to continue shaping the industry. Although plans for the program aren’t public, inside sources say it will start early summer and GM vehicle owners will be able to put their cars on Maven’s platform for other drivers to rent, with revenue being shared with the automaker.

If the pilot program turns out to be successful, GM will likely turned it into a full-fledged business, another step forward as the American automaker looks to transition from automaker to mobility provider. Currently, Maven already rents vehicles to individual drivers, and Maven Gig lends cars to drivers working for companies such as Uber and Lyft. But up until this point, those vehicles are owned by GM.
