Medical examination confirmed he was drunk, said police

A constable with the Border Security Force (BSF) was arrested after a 24-year-old woman filed a complaint against him for making vulgar gestures at her in a DTC bus at the South Campus police station on Monday, the police said on Tuesday.

The victim, who works with a NGO at R. K. Puram, said in her complaint that she had boarded bus no. 711 from Janakpuri to Satya Niketan on Monday when the accused who was in in plain clothes at the time of the incident started winking at her.

Accused Charan Singh also kept staring at her, alleged the woman, who immediately called the police. The police control room received a call at 2.50 p.m. regarding the incident, said the police.

A team rushed to the spot and stopped the bus before the accused could deboard it. Suspecting that Mr. Singh was drunk, the police detained him and later sent him to a hospital for medical examination.

‘Long wait’

Mr. Singh was arrested following confirmation that he was drunk at the time of the incident, said the police, adding that the accused is posted with a unit in the city.

Meanwhile, the victim alleged that she had to wait for over two hours at the police station before her complaint was registered. “They took a long time before sending the accused for medical examination. Soon after he was detained, I had asked them to take him for the test but the police did not listen to me. They asked me to lodge a complaint first,” she said.

The police said an FIR under IPC Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) has been registered against the accused.
