The students at Matanzas High School staged an assembly recently to recognize those lost in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
Seventeen chairs were set up, one for each of the victims. A card bearing each victim’s name was placed on each chair, along with items associated with his or her interests.
“We wanted to safely and effectively raise awareness that this can happen anywhere and just really stand with Marjory Stoneman Douglas and show our support,” explained MHS senior Alicia Bermudez during the March 6 School Board workshop meeting.
She and fellow senior Kelsey Sweeney attended the meeting to show a large banner signed by the students at Matanzas and to encourage board members to sign it as well.
In large letters, the banner reads, “Matanzas High stands with you” and “#MSDSTRONG.”
The banner was sent to Marjory Stoneman Douglas to display in one of the halls.
“Schools all around the country have done the same thing,” said Kelsey. “So their hallways when they are at school will be filled with all different banners just like this one from schools all around the country that are signed by their students.”
