A scuffle broke out between players of Regal Cricket Club and Wellington CC on Sunday during the semi-final of Mumbai Junior Cricket Shield at Mumbai Cricket Association's (MCA) Kandivli ground. The MCA on Monday received a complaint from Wellington, alleging manhandling and assault from Regal players.
The incident took place in the sixth over of the second innings when a Wellington bowler had an argument with a Regal batsman. According to the complaint, the Regal batsman charged towards the Wellington bowler and then signaled to his entire team after which they came onto the pitch with bats and assaulted the bowler and other Wellington players. Photographs of the assault have also been submitted to the MCA.
The match was held up for over an hour due to the scuffle. Wellington, in its complaint, have accused the umpires for turning a blind eye when the matter escalated. However, the match did begin later with a revised target and Regal emerged triumphant.
Wellington alleged that Regal players used foul language after the win. A complaint was lodged against Regal players at Kandivli police station. MCA's Joint Secretary Dr Unmesh Khanvilkar said the disciplinary committee will look into the issue.
