A 42-year-old man was gunned down and his wife shot at in Gurugram's Badshahpur locality on Tuesday, police said.

The incident took place at a time when the couple, identified as Anand Vashishtha and Karisma Vashishtha, were taking morning walk in Tyagi locality under Badshahpur police station around 5 am on Tuesday.

Anand received three bullet injuries and died on the spot. His wife received a bullet injury in the abdomen and is currently admitted in the hospital.

During investigation it appeared that a local criminal named, Tillu, allegedly fired at them as the deceased was a key witness in an attempt-to-murder case in which the accused is the prime suspect.

"Tillu was involved in a firing a month ago in which a person was injured. Anand was also present at the spot and had saved that person's life. He also became an eyewitness in that case," said Ravinder Kumar, PRO of Gurugram police.

Tillu had threatened Anand of dire consequences and told him to stay away from the case, but had refused. He had also sought for police protection as he feared for his life.

This incident has triggered huge anger among the locals. They blocked the Gurugram-Alwar National Highway for five hours leading to a huge traffic snarl. Several school buses also got stuck in the jam.
