
The Samajwadi Party on Wednesday handed BJP a crushing defeat in two crucial bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, forcing Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to admit that the saffron party’s performance was a lesson for them. While SP candidate Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel registered a resounding win over BJP’s Kaushlendra Singh Patel by a margin of 59,613 votes, the Akhilesh Yadav-led SP thumped BJP by a margin of 21,000 vote in Yogi Adityanath’s bastion of Gorakhpur. SP candidate Praveen Nishad defeated BJP’s Upendra Dutt Shukla by 21,000 votes to win Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat.
Meanwhile, controversy erupted in Gorakhpur after there were reports that the media was barred from entering the counting centre. There was ruckus in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly leading to temporary adjournment. However, an ECI official said the media was being briefed personally by the DM after each round’s progress.
The voter turnout was 47.45 per cent in Gorakhpur and 37.39 per cent in Phulpur in Sunday’s polling. The bypolls were necessitated after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya vacated the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats respectively following their election to the state legislative council. Adityanath has represented Gorakhpur in the Lok Sabha five times.

Gorakhpur district magistrate Rajeev Rautela, who is also the returning officer, announced the margin after the eighth round of counting.
After fourteen rounds of counting, SP candidate Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel is leading by 20,495 votes in Phulpur. He has managed to secure 1,55,314 votes, while BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel is second with 1,34,819 votes.
Commenting on the latest trends in UP and Bihar bypolls, Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia said it was clear BJP was being shown the door by the people. "People have spoken against the anti-farmer, anti-youth and anti-women policies of the government. It is very clear that BJP is being shown the door by the people," Scindia said.
After eleven rounds of counting, SP candidate Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel is leading by 15,713 votes in Phulpur. He has managed to secure 1,22,247 votes, while BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel is second with 1,06,534 votes.
Meanwhile, SP leader Naresh Uttam Patel has written to State Chief Election Officer stating people and media were removed from the counting center in Gorakhpur. He also alleged that the district administration was working towards making the BJP candidate win.

Meanwhile, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has condemned the move by the Gorakhpur DM to ban media from the counting centre. "Journalists have every right to report election results and shouldn't be stopped from doing their jobs," the organisation said.
With SP surging ahead in Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats, former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah mentioned of an incident on Twitter. "While, leaving the dinner yesterday BSP’s Satish Mishra had told me to look out for a surprise result in today’s counting. Trends at the moment would suggest he was right," Omar tweeted.
According to latest figures, SP's Praveen Kumar Nishad is leading with 74,077 votes in Gorakhpur. BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla is second with 70,317 votes after 4th round of counting. Meanwhile, SP and BSP workers have started celebrating following the lead in Gorakhpur and Phulpur. SP MP Ramgopal Yadav said the party would win both seats comfortably. "I think our margin of victory will be bigger in Gorakhpur than Phulpur, will win both comfortably," Yadav said.
Trying to clear the air over controversy surrounding media gag at Gorakhpur counting centre, an Election Commission official said reporters were being briefed personally by the DM after progress of each round of counting. "Media is inside the counting campus since morning. They are being allowed in the space for counting agents only. As per ECI instructions, media can't be allowed in the area of EVMs . There is a media centre as well inside the campus. Media is being briefed personally by DM after each round's progress. The figures for thress rounds has already been announced," the ECI official said.
In what may come as an embarassment to the ruling BJP, SP's Praveen Kumar Nishad is leading by 3,000 votes in Gorakhpur. SP candidate Praveen Nishad is the son of the Nishad Party national president Dr Sanjay Nishad. The Peace party and the Nishad Party had provided their support to the SP on both the Gorakhpur and the Phulpur seat in the bypolls.

Meanwhile, Lucknow Assembly has been adjourned till 12.20 pm following ruckus over the issue of media being kept out of counting centre in Gorakhpur. Reporters have been kept out of the counting area by the District Magistrate. The issue was raised by SP's Ram Govind Chaudhary.
In an interesting development, SP's Praveen Kumar Nishad is leading by 1,523 votes in Gorakhpur, the bastion of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He has secured a total of 44,979 votes, while BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla has slipped behind with 43,456 votes.
It seems SP is headed for a win in Phulpur. After eight rounds of counting, SP candidate Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel is leading by 9,924 votes. He has managed to secure 87,272 votes, while BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel is second with 77,348 votes.
Meanwhile, UP deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya expressed confidence of BJP winning both Gorakhpur and Phulpur bypolls. 'I firmly believe that we will win both Gorakhpur and Phulpur. SP is leading in initial rounds but a number of rounds are still left. I know the voters of that area, we will have a win with a comfortable margin of a lakh,' Maurya said.
Samajwadi Party's Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel is leading by 6,931 votes in Phulpur. He has secured 54,562 votes, while BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel is second with 47,631 votes.
According to the latest update, SP's Praveen Kumar Nishad has managed to narrow the gap with BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla in Gorakhpur. BJP's Shukla is leading with 15,577 votes, while the SP candidate is close second with 13,911 votes. Earlier, BJP was leading in Gorakhpur by 3,000 votes.
From 1996 to 2004, SP had a stronghold over Phulpur Lok Sabha seat. However, in 2009 BSP's Kapil Muni Karwariya won from the seat and subsequently in 2014, BJP's Keshav Prasad Maurya secured a victory.
