KANPUR: District and sessions judge, Kanpur Nagar,
Shashi Kant Shukla, on Tuesday reserved order on the bail application of accused
Anand Khatri and Mohit Dhingra from whom the police had seized a huge cache of demonetised currency notes to the tune of Rs 96.14 crore. The duo was arrested by the police on January 17.
Additional district government counsel (
ADGC), Asif Ali, while opposing the bail application of two accused, pleaded that as the crime pertained to violation of SBN Act, therefore, the bail applications of all the six accused were liable to be rejected.
When the judge asked why the accused had collected the demonetised currency notes, the defence failed to reply and satisfy the court. The court thereafter reserved the order, the ADGC stated.
The police had arrested 16 persons, including a builder Anand Khatri in connection with the seizure of over Rs 96 crore in demonetised currency notes from the builder's ancestral house in Swaroop Nagar.
The district judge had earlier rejected the bail application of six co-accused in this case on February 28 last.
Initially, the police had arrested four persons and their interrogation led to the arrest of other persons and recovery of old currency notes stashed in gunny bags.
