Samajwadi Party triggered celebrations at the party headquarters while a sense of gloom and shock ruled the air at the Bharatiya Janata Party office.
SP's lead on the Phulpur seat right from the first round prompted early celebrations by party workers. By noon, in more good news, the SP candidate from Gorakhpur also took a lead adding to the revelry.

By 1pm, workers started playing with colours, also raising slogans hailing the SP-BSP alliance like "
Bua-Bhatija Zindabad" and "Jai Akhilesh".
At around 1.30pm, Samajwadi Party candidate from Phulpur Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel had secured a lead of over 22,000 votes against
BJP candidate Kaushalendra Singh Patel.
In Gorakhpur, meanwhile, Samajwadi Party's Praveen Kumar Nishad had garnered a lead of over 19,000 votes by the end of the 20th round of counting.
