Durban - Cameron Wright has added great value at scrumhalf for the Sharks following his return from a stint in France with Montpellier, and together with Louis Schreuder, he has been given the scrumhalf duties at Kings Park this Super Rugby season.
Sharks head coach Robert du Preez has emphasised the squad system regularly, pointing out that every player in the squad will and must contribute, and that looks to be true for the scrumhalf department as the season progresses.
"I always believe in healthy competition. If I get better then Louis Schreuder will need to get better, if he does, then that pushes me to get even better," Wright told the Sharks website from Australia, where they are preparing for Saturday's Super Rugby clash against the Brumbies.
"Pushing each other has been awesome and a player like Louis has a lot of experience so I’ve been able to learn a lot from him. It’s really healthy within the Sharks environment.”
This is his Wright's first tour to Australia and New Zealand with the Sharks.
"My experience so far of touring has been really good. The opportunity to be on this tour with the guys, in a beautiful place like Sydney which has been most welcoming, makes it all the more enjoyable," he said.
Of his own game, Wright admitted that he is very happy with his form.
"I’m pretty stoked with the way things are going, although you can never be completely satisfied with your performance," he said.
"You always want to improve and better yourself and ideally you want to be playing at your best.
"I left The Sharks in 2015 for France and on coming back (in 2017), my initial thoughts were about what I could give to the Sharks, not what I could take. That includes the physical, mental and emotional aspects – you want to give 100% in all three. If I want to compete with the best, then I have to be fit and ready for those players. This is a great opportunity for me to push myself to new heights and I think it’s coming together nicely."
The Sharks are expected to name their side on Thursday, and kick-off on Saturday is at 10:45 (SA time).
