SANDWICH – A home in the 700 block of North Cedar Street was declared “uninhabitable” by authorities after a fire Tuesday morning.
According to a statement issued by Sandwich Community Fire Protection District Chief Jason Pruski, fire crews were dispatched to a structure fire at 2:58 a.m. in the 700 block of North Cedar Street. Upon arrival, they found a two-story home with the entire rear of the home and an enclosed porch fully involved, with the fire extending to the first and second floors of the home. Crews initially attacked the fire from the exterior of the home, before moving to an interior attack.
The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes, with assistance from the Little Rock-Fox, Bristol-Kendall, Oswego, Montgomery, Newark, Big Rock, and Lisbon-Seward fire departments. The Waterman and Bristol-Kendall fire districts provided backup coverage of the Sandwich district during the fire.
All occupants were out of the home upon arrival of the initial companies. As the home was deemed uninhabitable, the American Red Cross responded to assist the occupants.
One firefighter was treated at the scene for a minor injury.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is thought to have been started by smoking materials, Pruski said.
