Sitharaman to visit State on March 25

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will visit Dehradun on March 25, her first visit to the Sate after taking charge of the Defence Minsitry. Confirming this, the Minister of State for Higher Education and Cooperative Development Dhan Singh Rawat said on Tuesday that the Union Minister would attend a programme at the residence of the Chief Minister on the day during which the State higher education department would felicitate 140 youngsters who cleared defence services entrance examinations like National Defence Academy (NDA) and Combined Defence Services (CDS).

The department would provide an appreciation amount of Rs 50, 000 to each of these selected youngsters.

Informing his plans to bring in an umbrella Act which would be overriding on the existing Acts related to the universities of the State, Rawat said that the Act would have all universities of the state under its jurisdiction. He further informed that a seven- member committee has been constituted to prepare draft of the act.

The Act once in force would have all 31 (both government and private) universities of the state and would give right to the State Government to intervene in important issues related with the universities.

“The proposed act would put the State Government in a position to  decide the fee structure of the private medical colleges and universities,” he added.
