Baseball season is officially here, can you believe it?

On Thursday afternoon the Central Michigan University baseball team opens the 2018 docket with a 3:05 p.m. non-conference contest against Lawrence Tech (10-6) from always sunny Theunissen Stadium. CMU then hosts Northwestern (5-7) for a three-game set on Friday and Saturday.

Friday’s non-conference doubleheader starts at 12:35 p.m. while Saturday’s finale is scheduled to start at 2:05 p.m.

The Chippewas have struggled through the early portion of the season as they have gone 2-13-1 in action in Texas, New Mexico and Florida.

They have lost eight-straight games and 11 of their last 12 starts after going 2-2 out of the chute.

Thursday’s starter has yet to be announced. Michael Brettell (1-2, 6.95 ERA) will start in Friday’s opener while Dazon Cole (0-3, 6.43 ERA) will go in game two.

Tyler Hankins (0-2, 6.23 ERA) is scheduled to get the start Saturday.

Offensively, Griffin Lockwood-Powell leads the Chippewas with a .342 batting average. Mt. Pleasant’s Zach Heeke is also hitting .289 and has been hit by nine pitches so far this season, which is tied for fourth nationally.
