Last week, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau or the SLTPB carried on a well-coordinated media campaign at ITB 2018 in Berlin, as informed by the Tourism and Christian Religious Affairs Ministry in a recent statement.
As part of this operation, a high-profile press conference took place side by side of the trade exhibition with the participation of numerous famous travel journalists.
The representatives of the media were mainly from German-speaking countries and comprised popular media houses like FVW, DPA, Diewelt, Discovery Channel and Reuters.
As per the industry analysts, the huge participation was corroboration of the interest of media in Sri Lanka, which is at present, is a preferred long-haul holiday destination in Asia for Europeans.
The panel at the media conference comprised – Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs Minister John Amaratunga, Sri Lanka Ambassador in Germany Karunasena Hettiarachchi, SLTPB Managing Director Sutheash Balasubramanium, Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) Past President Mahen Kariyawasam, The Hotels’ Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) President Sanath Ukwatte and Association of Small and Medium Enterprises in Tourism (ASMET) President Rohan Abeywickrama.
Hettiarachchi emphasized that Sri Lanka is gradually following its economic programme in terms of development and that the country has made an influence as a favorable long-haul destination.
Amaratunga observed that Sri Lanka had an continuous record related to participation at ITB, particularly at the time of the conflict period and appreciated the faith placed by German and European travellers in constantly travelling to Sri Lanka, even during the conflict.
